|Title||John Kachel Woven Coverlet|
Red, ecru, and blue jacquard woven coverlet. Rose and star patterns in red and blue stripes. Fringe on three sides, mostly torn off. Woven label on bottom corners reads: "M. By John Kachel / Sarah Steier / 1840."
John Kachel was a professional weaver who lived from 1809 to 1889. He worked in and near Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was most prolific as a rug maker, but he also made commissioned woven coverlets. His coverlets are labeled with his name, and the name of his commissioner - in this case, Sarah Steier.
