Title Suitcase
Object Name Suitcase
Date c. 1910
Description Japanese suitcase (kori). Two piece suitcase - lid slips over the base. Base and lid are made of willow whips which are woven with cotton string. The corners and edges of the lid are reinforced with green burlap. The suitcase was used by Sen (Iwasaki) when she immigrated to the US as a picture bride. On the side of the lid is a hotel sticker with inscription "Ku Mamoto Ya", it was probably applied in 1933 when Mrs. Maekawa returned to Japan to deposit her husband's ashes in the family plot. Inscribed in black on the sides of the lid is "K. Maekawa" & "16843". This number was assigned to the family when they evacuated their home in Auburn in 1942 to the Pinedale detention camp in California.
